The Ed Sullivan Show

Ed Sullivan was an entertainment reporter and gossip columnist when he came to television in 1948 with his variety show “Toast of the Town.” Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin were among the guests on his first show, along with Rodgers and Hammerstein previewing the music from “South Pacific.” Ed Sullivan hosted just about every kind of entertainer and performance imaginable, from circus acts and puppets to Elvis Presley and the Beatles. In 1955 the show became officially “The Ed Sullivan Show” and ruled variety television until it ended in 1971. Ed logged 1,087 episodes over 23 years, and there were many special moments along the way. After one particular show in 1963, Ed Sullivan took time to pay a compliment to the young artist who created his likeness to promote the show. Ed Sullivan wrote a hand-signed note to Robert Thompson saying, “Thanks a million for the striking pen and ink cartoon that truly expressed our 15th Anniversary Show.” Thanks for all the memories, Ed.
